Alan Gibson's Mount Elgon Trek in aid of Farm Africa

Team from the UK's Food Industry brave the seven-day hike over the extinct volcano, Mount Elgon

On 26 January 2018, thirteen representatives from the UK and Ireland's Food and drink sector took off on a gruelling seven-day hike over the extinct volcano, Mount Elgon that straddles the Uganda-Kenya border.

Alan Gibson, Chief Commercial Officer with Devenish, was part of the group that took on this challenge in aid of farm Africa.

"I wanted to thank you all for your support for the Farm Africa 7-day Trek to Uganda and Kenya that I was privileged to join last week, along with other colleagues from the UK & Ireland Food Industry.

"We survived the mountainous terrain of Mount Elgon, a 20-million-year-old extinct volcano, climbing a number of peaks over 14,000 feet, enduring the extreme heat during the day and sub-zero temperatures at night in our tents, as well as drinking up to 7.5 litres of water per day to avoid the effects of altitude sickness, a real risk and which affected 2 members of our team.

"Apart from the natural beauty and company of fellow trekkers, the most memorable part of the trip was meeting the farmers and their families that Farm Africa is helping to grow more of the right crops to a higher quality.

"Below are a few photographs to give a sense of the trip, which to date had raised over £200,000.

"Many thanks again, Alan"
