The week long Academy is run by PE and Sports Educationalists who have established the programme following research showing a rapid decline in the participation rates of young people in sport and physical activity. The Academy gives children an enjoyable week of high energy sports and a chance to be entertained during the summer holidays.
The sponsorship package provided by Devenish Nutrition has provided 12 students a full week at the Academy, held at Belfast Harlequins Rugby Club in Belfast. Sports played include football, rugby and cricket. The package targets underprivileged children from lower socio economic backgrounds, who cannot afford to attend such an event to enjoy the specialised coaching clinics.
David Dougherty, one of the coaches at the academy commented ‘This sponsorship from Devenish Nutrition has afforded the less fortunate children within the surrounding community the opportunity to take part in various sports in a top class facility. This will provide the children with an everlasting experience that they will never forget.’
Eamonn Whelan, Operations Director at Devenish Nutrition commented “This is our first year sponsoring this event and the set up at the Academy is fantastic. It is obvious all the kids are thoroughly enjoying themselves whilst getting lots of exercise and trying new sports. It is also nice to see children from different backgrounds unselfconsciously interacting and playing together... a great illustration of the positive impact sport can have.”
