As Ireland awaits clarity from the European Commission on the renewal of its Nitrates Derogation, Devenish Nutrition is providing farmers with innovative solutions to optimise nitrogen use, maintain productivity, and navigate regulatory uncertainty.

Recent reports from the Irish Farmers’ Journal note that Commissioner Jessika Roswall did not commit to extending Ireland’s current derogation, which allows select farms to apply higher levels of organic nitrogen than the EU standard. While overall nitrate levels in Irish rivers have fallen to their lowest point since 2016, and ammonia emissions have improved thanks to modern nutrient management practices, certain regions—especially the south-east—still face elevated nitrogen concentrations.

“Farmers are facing a critical moment,” said Adrian Patterson, Global Head of Ruminant and Business Development at Devenish Nutrition. “With the EU evaluating Ireland’s nitrogen derogation, clear guidance is still pending. Our role is to provide practical, well proven solutions that help farmers maintain productivity, comply with regulations, and make the most of every hectare.”

Devenish Nutrition offers a comprehensive suite of commercially-focused solutions, including precision nutrient management, slurry and fertiliser guidance, and soil health optimisation. These tools help farmers improve yields, enhance animal performance, and reduce nutrient losses, even in the face of regulatory uncertainty.

“We don’t just advise; we deliver measurable results,” added Ciaran Conway, Ruminant Nutritionist. “Our clients are better equipped to manage nitrogen effectively, protect water quality, and stay compliant - no matter what the EU decides on the derogation.”

Devenish Nutrition is a global leader in animal nutrition and farm solutions. We combine science-driven innovation with practical farm expertise to help farmers achieve sustainable, profitable, and high-performing operations.
